Solo Bharatanatyam Arangetram performance by Srimathi Sridhar

Bharathanatyam, the traditional art form which skillfully embodies the three primary ingredients of dance – Bhavam, Ragam and Thalam, fascinated Srimathi Sridhar right from toddlerhood. Srimathi Sridhar, a rising junior at PSSenior Secondary School, and She is the daughter of Dr. Sridhar Narayanan, News Presenter, JAYA TV, Producer & Creative Head, NUMBER 1 MEDIAMASTERS PRIVATE LIMITED, CHENNAI, gave a two hour solo Bharatanatyam Arangetram performance at Vani Mahal- Maha Swami Hall. She has been learning the ancient and venerated form of Bharatanatyam, for the last 9 years from “KALAIMAMANI” Srekala Bharath, Founder Guru of ‘THEJAS’ in Chennai. To Srimathi’s credit, she has qualified for her Arangetram at the young age of 12. Selvi. Srimathi Sridhar started learning Bharathanatyam at the tender age of 3 ½ and is a disciple of Guru Kalaimamani. Smt. Srekala Bharath one of the foremost exponents of the Vazhuvoor tradition. Mrs. Vijaya Sridhar. Mrs, Vijaya Sridhar has dedicated her life for shaping Srimathi into a dancer and has achieved her goal with the great blessings of their Sathguru Parama Pujya Sri Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda of Mysore and Acharyan Thirumani Appan Swamigal.
Srimathi had performed 6 dance pieces depicting the range of the Thematic Bharatanatyam “SRIMANN NARAYANA” repertoire, incorporating the three elements of ‘Nritta’, ‘Nritya’ and ‘Natya. The accompanying orchestra featured talented local artists, Sri. Bhavani Kishore Kumar-vocal, Yuvakala Bharathi, Sri. Dhanamjeyan-Mridangam, Sri. M.S. Kannan-violin, sri. V.Sankara Narayanan- Flute and Karukurichi S. Balaji- Veena. Srimathi’s performance received a standing ovation from critics, artists and well wishers.
The audience responded enthusiastically to Srimathi’s performance as she displayed her mastery of the 6 traditional Arangetram thematic pieces. The program started with a traditional ‘Anjali’ in Ragam Valaji, to invoke the blessings of Lord Srimann Narayanan, the Supreme Lord. Srimathi made her way in with ‘Andal Kouthuvam’ in Gowlai, a devotional offering to Sri Ranganathar of Srirangam, followed by Varnam “SADHINCHENE” in gorgeous Arabi Raga, set to the great ‘Pancharatna Kritis’ where in Thyagaraja appeared to be telling the greatness of the lord in a lucid manner most enthusiastically. Varnam is the traditional test of the performer’s mastery of the dramatic elements through coordination of facial expression, hand gestures and intricate footwork and Srimathi executed this with grace and depth of feeling, moving the audience to experience rasa (aesthetic flavor), bhava (emotion), and abhinayam (expression). In the next piece, Baro Krishnaiah- Ragamalika, the dancer brought alive the minutiae of the composition in which the swaras are set to various jathis to fit in the framework of thalam.
Srimathi demonstrated the narrative and expressive aspects of the dance form in Varnam, by evoking the devotee’s sentiments of love and rejection as she beseeches Lord Krishna’s presence. The items following the Docu-Feature on Srimathi with alluring voice of Dr. Sridhar Narayanan, News Presenter, JAYA TV, Producer, Media Masters included a wonderful composition of ‘VADAVARAIYAI’ , the greatness of Lord Krishna was consummated by srimathi with beautiful, enchanting expressions by throwing the following questions to the audience “What use is of the tongue which doesn’t praise the person who was messenger as for 5(Pandavas)? What use is of the tongue which doesn’t chant Lord Krishna’s name” which engrossed, elicited audience applause several times, especially as Srimathi depicted the Krishna Bhava with emotions or ‘Nava Rasas.’ After honouring Chief Guests and their valuable speeches, Srimathi rendered the Tillana in Kathanakuthukalam, an elaborate sequence of pure dance involving a fine display of dexterity in footwork. Ending with Mangalam, the performance captured the spirit and beauty of the art.

Venkatesan, Guru ‘Kalaimamani’ Srekala Bharath, dance students, dance critics and supporters. Srimathi’s performance with growing wonder at her skill, stamina, and immersion in the spirit of the dance, they knew why they associate youth with hope and promise for the future.
Her keen interest and dedication coupled with sincerity, passion and innate talent presented itself at her stage performance with her guru Smt. Srekala Bharath and other dance colleagues in ‘MEENAKSHI VAIBHAVAM’ as KUTTI MEENAKSHI at the age of 6 at Chennai, on this occasion She has been named as “KUTTI VAIJAINTHIMALA” by her Guru’s Guru Mrs. Sarasa in 2005, Ever since, she has accompanied her Guru Smt. Srekala bharath in various group combinations and dance productions such “ANNAMAYYA”as Lord Krishna, at the age of 6, as Baala RAMAR in “CHENNAIYIL THIRUVAIYARU”sponsored by Raj TV in 2008 and Zee TV in 2009. She has participated in “Tamil Isai Sangam’ and Iyal Isai Nataka Mandram in Raja Annamalai Mandram and Music College in 2007 as Baala Krishna and in “ARUPADAI VEEDU “as Baala Muruga at the age of 8 in Vani Mahal, Chennai, She had given appearances in the recitals given by her Guru Smt. Srekala Bharath in Karur, Coimbatore, Nagapatinam, Chidambaram-NATYANJALI, International popular Dance Festival , Tirupathi-TTD DEVASTHANAM as well as other parts of Tamilnadu.
